Category browsing on a well-built site is frequently excellent. Open a terminal block category with a thousand products in it and you will find facets for product type, termination, rated cross section, poles, mounting, colour, wire gauge, twenty approvals, and sliders for current and voltage. Every attribute that actually defines the part, natively owned, returning a usable result set in a couple of clicks. Real work went into that and it shows.
Now type a product name into the search box on the same site. Fourteen thousand results, and a single dropdown to narrow them by category.
Same catalog, same attributes, same session. Two entirely different products, depending on which door the buyer came through.
This survives for years because of who tests it, and the pattern is consistent enough to be predictable. People who work at the company navigate by taxonomy, because they know the taxonomy. They think in categories, they build the categories, and the category path is genuinely the fastest route for them. Buyers arriving from an external search engine do not have that map. They land on a product page or a search results page, and if they need to widen out, they use the search box, because it is the only feature they can see.
The technical reason is usually architectural rather than a decision anyone made. Browse filters run against the product data model, where attributes are typed, structured fields. Search runs against a text index, and that index was never told the attributes exist. Two systems, built at different times, often by different people, each doing its job correctly in isolation.
The cost is not that the buyer fails. It is that the buyer refines somewhere else. Faced with fourteen thousand results and one dropdown, the practical move is to go back to the search engine and add words to the query. That refinement happens on a page that also contains your competitors and every distributor carrying an equivalent part, and it is a page where your catalog depth counts for nothing.
There is a ninety-second test that settles this for any site. Do not use the menu. Type a product name into the search box the way a buyer arriving from Google would, then try to narrow the result by the one attribute that defines that product family. Rated current, pole count, cross section, whatever it is for you. If the only thing on offer is a list of category names, you have found it. Worth running on mobile as well, since a filter sidebar that collapses into an unlabeled icon is functionally a third version of the same catalog.
The encouraging part is that the depth is already built. One filter set behind every path is usually an indexing and configuration question rather than a rebuild, because the attribute data is already sitting there being used correctly by browse. That distinction, between what needs configuring and what needs rebuilding, is the thing worth establishing before anyone commits to a direction.
